How to read the SMS fire alerts

Users can choose between receiving a fires GPS position or receiving distance and direction information from the fire in relation to a pre defined reference point

GPS position:

When choosing to receive the latitude and longitude of the fire the SMS message will include the satellites name that detected the fire;

  • MSG = Meteosat Second Generation – Not as accurate but updated every 15 minutes
  • Terra = MODIS  - Very accurate but only available in the mornings (10am) and evenings (22pm)
  • Aqua = MODIS - Very accurate but only available in the afternoons (15pm) and early morning (03am)

Example of such a message:

“ Terra, -25.879, 29.765” (Position in decimal degrees)

Distance and Direction:

This option provides people with the distance and direction of a fire in relation to a pre defined reference point within their area of interest.

Example of such a message:

“MSG, 27.5km, NW, Bloemfontein, 14:30 SAST”

The message reads: A fire has been detected by Meteosat Second Generation 27.7 km North West of Bloemfontein at 14: 30 local time
